What a surge does to a house
We have seen what a surge looks like. At one Edmonton home, a lightning strike blew plugs right out of the wall.
Every wire in your home is rated to carry a set number of amps. Push more than that through it and it heats up fast. The outer jacket melts, the insulation melts, and it can arc or start a fire.
A surge is that on a much larger scale. The service pushing something like a thousand amps into a 100 amp home for a split second, roughly ten times what the wiring is built for. Every plug in the house can go, along with anything plugged into them.
A surge protector mounted at your panel takes that hit instead. It is all panel work, nothing in the house gets opened up, and modern units are small enough to sit in a breaker slot. Usually done in one day, by one electrician.
When to book whole-home surge protection
Anyone can get hit by a surge. The people who call us about it are the ones with something expensive on the other end of the wiring.
Working from home
Two to five thousand dollars in computer equipment is not unusual now, especially in software or anything AI related where the machine has to be powerful. One surge takes the whole setup.
Home theatre
A ten thousand dollar theatre setup is a lot of sensitive hardware on the same circuits. Electronics are extremely susceptible to surges, and the damage is not always to the thing you would expect.
A house full of devices
You may not have one expensive item, but count the televisions, computers, consoles, and appliances with boards in them. It adds up faster than most people realize.
What does it cost to install whole-home surge protection?
There is not one price that fits every job. It depends on your panel and which device style fits it:
$600-$700
Cost for whole-home surge protection, installed
$3,000-$4,000
Cost to replace your home theatre
Most homes have at least two televisions, and one surge can take both. That is before you count the computers, the appliances, or anything else in the house with a board in it. The numbers tend to make the decision on their own.

Questions homeowners ask us
What actually causes a power surge?
Lightning is the one people expect. Other causes are on the utility side, including the meter back-feeding from the service cables. Large motor loads inside your own home cycling on and off also create smaller spikes that wear on electronics over time.
How long does the install take?
Usually a day, and it is one electrician rather than a crew. All of the work happens at the panel, so nothing in the house gets opened up.
Will it work with my panel?
Almost certainly. There are two device styles, one that ties into the feeder cables and one that installs like a breaker, and between them most panels can be fitted. We confirm which suits yours when we look at it.
What does it actually protect?
Everything downstream of the panel, which is the whole house. Appliances, electronics, and the wiring itself. Anything with a circuit board in it is most at risk, and that covers most of what is in a modern home.
